EU legal guarantee guides
Shopify warranty apps and EU law: what you need, and which app does it
Shopify warranty apps sell extended warranties or register products. EU law asks for something else: the legal guarantee notice on every product page. What each type of app does, and how to cover the EU rules.

Search the Shopify App Store for “warranty” and you get three kinds of app. Only one of them deals with what EU law asks of your store from 27 September 2026. This page sorts them out.
The three kinds of warranty app
| Type | What it does | EU legal guarantee notice? |
|---|---|---|
| Extended warranty and protection plans | Sells paid cover at checkout, run by a third-party insurer or provider. | No |
| Warranty registration and claims | Lets customers register a product and file claims; tracks returns and repairs. | No |
| Legal guarantee notice | Shows the EU’s harmonised notice, and the GARAN label where it applies, on product pages. | Yes |
The first two are commercial tools: they add a service or revenue. The third is about consumer information the law requires. A store can use one of each.
What EU law asks for
Every consumer in the EU already has a legal guarantee of at least two years, against the seller, for free. From 27 September 2026, sellers must tell them, with the harmonised legal guarantee notice, before purchase, in the consumer’s language. The design is fixed by Regulation (EU) 2025/1960 and may not be edited.
That has two consequences for warranty apps:
- An extended-warranty app does not replace the notice. Your store needs the notice either way.
- An extended warranty must offer something beyond the legal guarantee, and must not be sold as cover the consumer already has by law. Read legal guarantee vs commercial guarantee.
Assay: the EU legal guarantee app for Shopify
Assay is built by Transactful for the third job only:
- the official EU notice on every product page, from the Official Journal artwork;
- all 24 EU languages, matched to each shopper;
- an app block or app embed, in any theme, with a check that it is in place;
- GARAN durability labels for products whose producer guarantees them for more than two years;
- bulk labels by collection or tag, rules for new products, and a compliance record on Assay Professional.
Assay does not sell warranties or handle claims. It works beside any warranty app you already use.
The free plan covers the mandatory notice on unlimited products, with no branding.
Choosing the right setup
- You sell to EU consumers and offer no extra warranty: the notice is all you need. Use Assay’s free plan, or another method.
- You sell extended warranties: keep your warranty app, add the notice, and check that the plan’s wording does not claim the legal guarantee as its own.
- Your products have a long manufacturer durability guarantee: add the notice and the GARAN label for those products.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best Shopify warranty app for EU compliance?
It depends on the job. To meet the EU rule from 27 September 2026 you need an app that shows the harmonised legal guarantee notice on product pages, such as Assay. Extended-warranty and registration apps do a different job and do not show the notice.
Do I need a warranty app to sell in the EU?
You do not need to sell warranties. You do need to show the EU legal guarantee notice before purchase, because every consumer already has a legal guarantee of at least two years.
Can I sell extended warranties to EU customers?
Yes, as a voluntary extra. Make clear what it adds beyond the legal guarantee, and do not present the consumer's legal rights as part of what they pay for.
Does Assay sell warranties or handle claims?
No. Assay shows the official EU legal guarantee notice and, for products with a qualifying producer guarantee, the GARAN durability label. Claims under the legal guarantee stay with you, the seller.
